He had settled along the Juniata River, but in 1772 heremoved to the West Branch and marked off a tract a mile square.Afterward, believing he had more ground than he could profitable use , hegave half of his tract to John Jackson, who came from Orange County, NY.Both Hamilton and Jackson were good mechanics. As carpenters, joiners,wagon-makers, tanners, and blacksmiths their services were in greatdemand. These men with their families left their Pine Creek homes at thetime of the Great Runaway of 1778. Arriving at Fort Augusta, Hamilton,at the urgent request of the commander, Colone Hunter, remained to helpdefend the fort. He was charged with enrolling and organizing the menfrom the West Branch to protect the settlement at what is now Sunbury andNorthumberland. Several houses in the vicinity had been vacated and Hamilton's familyoccupied one of them until peace had been returned to that district . Hamilton) was also a nativ e ofPine Creek Township, and in its subscription schools obtained his educatio n.As a boy he worked on his father's farm, but afterward learned the printer 'strade, and in 1837 became editor of THE WATCHMAN, published at Bellefonte, Centre County, PA., with which he was connected for several years. Later h e was similarly employed in Harrisburg, PA, and was afterward editor of a paper in Jersey Shore. For a number of years he was also engaged in pilotin grafts from Losk Haven to Marietta. He purchased a tract of timber land in Wayn eTownship, Clinton Co., at the foot of Bald Eagle Mountain, the lumber and bar kfrom which he sold, and after clearing 170 acres, placed it under a high state of cultivation. For many years he was one of the most popular and successful teachers of Pine Creek Township, having charge of the Duncan and McGu ire schools, and having among his pupils some of the most prominent citiz ensof this community at the present day. While gathering bark upon his far m he contracte a cold, which resulted in his death in 1850, when our subject(Alexander K.) was 15 years old. He was a Whig in politics, an dwas one of the most highly respected citizens of Pine Creek Township. At Bi gMeddons, Tioga Co., PA., he married Ann Morrison, by whom he had 8 childrsn: Robert, who died at the age of 12 years, John, who married Dolly Armstrong, and lives in Iowa, Alexander K, of this sketch: Jackson, a resident of Pine Cree ktownship: Anna Amanda: Nancy Jane Hayes, deceased: Elizabeth, who died in childhood: and Mary P., who is employed as a saleslady in Lock Haven. After the dea thof her husband, Mrs. Hamilton made her home with her children until she, too ,was called to her final rest in 1871, being laid by his side in the old P ineCreek Cemetery of Pine Creek Township. Both were faithful members of the Presbyterian Church, and had many friends throughout the community. from History of Clinton County by Linn pg. 656 - Alexander Hamilton was a grandson of Alexander Hamilton, one of the f irst settlers of Pine Creek Township, learned his trade in Harrisburg, and established the American Patriot at Bellefonte, Feb. 15, 1814. He al sohad a contract for carrying the mails on horseback through sone of the west ern counties. He broke up and returned to his home. He was the eldest o f afamily of ten children, five boys and five girls, in the old homestead stil loccupied by part of the family. The fmaily were Scotch Presbyterian, and th eyoungest was the first to make a profession of religion and to join the church .He has been a missionary among the Indians for thirty five years (William) .Alexander was the last to join the church, and pretty well up in years. He wa s a politician, active in political meetings. He taught school from necessity, not choice. At a later period he began the publication of an anti-Masoni cpaper at Jersey Shore, but not succeeding financially he fell back on school-teaching as a means of supporting his family. He was always hopeful, believing t hatthere was something better in store for him; and perhaps there was, but i t wasbeyond the borders of this life. He died at the age of sixty, of inflammati onof the brain. Hamilton) was also a nativ e ofPine Creek Township, and in its subscription schools obtained his educatio n.As a boy he worked on his father's farm, but afterward learned the printer 'strade, and in 1837 became editor of THE WATCHMAN, published at Bellefonte, Centre County, PA., with which he was connected for several years. Later h e was similarly employed in Harrisburg, PA, and was afterward editor of a paper in Jersey Shore. For a number of years he was also engaged in pilotin grafts from Losk Haven to Marietta. He purchased a tract of timber land in Wayn eTownship, Clinton Co., at the foot of Bald Eagle Mountain, the lumber and bar kfrom which he sold, and after clearing 170 acres, placed it under a high state of cultivation. For many years he was one of the most popular and successful teachers of Pine Creek Township, having charge of the Duncan and McGu ire schools, and having among his pupils some of the most prominent citiz ensof this community at the present day. While gathering bark upon his far m he contracte a cold, which resulted in his death in 1850, when our subject(Alexander K.) was 15 years old. He was a Whig in politics, an dwas one of the most highly respected citizens of Pine Creek Township. At Bi gMeddons, Tioga Co., PA., he married Ann Morrison, by whom he had 8 childrsn: Robert, who died at the age of 12 years, John, who married Dolly Armstrong, and lives in Iowa, Alexander K, of this sketch: Jackson, a resident of Pine Cree ktownship: Anna Amanda: Nancy Jane Hayes, deceased: Elizabeth, who died in childhood: and Mary P., who is employed as a saleslady in Lock Haven. After the dea thof her husband, Mrs. Hamilton made her home with her children until she, too ,was called to her final rest in 1871, being laid by his side in the old P ineCreek Cemetery of Pine Creek Township. Both were faithful members of the Presbyterian Church, and had many friends throughout the community. from History of Clinton County by Linn pg. 656 - Alexander Hamilton was a grandson of Alexander Hamilton, one of the f irst settlers of Pine Creek Township, learned his trade in Harrisburg, and established the American Patriot at Bellefonte, Feb. 15, 1814. He al sohad a contract for carrying the mails on horseback through sone of the west ern counties. He broke up and returned to his home. He was the eldest o f afamily of ten children, five boys and five girls, in the old homestead stil loccupied by part of the family. The fmaily were Scotch Presbyterian, and th eyoungest was the first to make a profession of religion and to join the church .He has been a missionary among the Indians for thirty five years (William) .Alexander was the last to join the church, and pretty well up in years. He wa s a politician, active in political meetings. He taught school from necessity, not choice. At a later period he began the publication of an anti-Masoni cpaper at Jersey Shore, but not succeeding financially he fell back on school-teaching as a means of supporting his family. He was always hopeful, believing t hatthere was something better in store for him; and perhaps there was, but i t wasbeyond the borders of this life.
