Sterling was stationed at Clovis, New Mexico when I finished my first year as schoolteacher and we decided as soon as I could get to New Mexico we would be married. My brother, Maurice,in the Air Force and stationed at Laredo, Texas, was home on a furlough, sowhen he, his wife Doris, and 2 year old son left to drive back I went alongand from Laredo I took a train to New Mexico. Sterling's mom, brothers Keith 15, Eldon 12, and Shirley 8 wanted to be at our wedding and they were to join us at Clovis for the big event. Sterling looked high and low for sleeping quarters for them; but at an Army town during the war extra rooming quarters were scarce as hen's teeth so he wrote and told them not to come. I had-arrived at Clovis on May 29th and the next day being Memorial Day and. the soldiers being on holiday, we thought the 30th would be an ideal wedding day. It was late in the evening when I had arrived and stores were closed. Sterling had the rings laid back at the jewelry store so the first problem waswe couldn't get the rings (the store keeper had even left town on a 1 day holiday). We decided we could get around that problem by using the ring of the couple that was to stand up with us and get our own later. Our friends, Mervin and Jean Schasker were from Freeport, Illinois, and in the Air Force too. They had a car so we decided to drive to Roswell, New Mexico (around 100 miles) and be married there. We made the drive but of course found the courthouse closed because of the holiday, so couldn't get our license. After one or two of such incidents we gave up on getting married that day and returned to Clovis, crossing over some of the most desolate ranch land I have ever seen. We held our breath all the way because gas rationing and tire rationing which meant we only had the 4 tires on the car (no spare and gas stations were few and far between in that desolate area. Curfew for the fellowswas 15 till 11 p.m. and you better not be late or you would be restricted to camp for a week or maybe two. I think they barely made that curfew. The next evening we again encountered frustrating incidents. It was around 6 p.m. before Sterling and Mervin got in from camp and all stores, courthouse, etc. were closed. However we prevailed on the jeweler to open the store and get the rings and the lady judge to let us come to her home to get the license. The minister said it was prayer meeting night but he would marry us afterwards if we so desired. We so desired. So at approximately 10:30 p.m. onMay 31st, a very shy young girl and a handsome soldier became man and wife in the Methodist Church with Mervin and Jean Schasker as witnesses. We made a hurried exit from the church to a small hamburger place for the curfew hourwas near at hand and the soldiers had to be off the streets. The next evening when my new husband came to our room (a small room in a small hotel he had a telegram from his mother saying she and the 3 youngest would arrive in Clovis on the 4 a.m. train. You can imagine the anguish we went through, we thought they weren't coming and here we were alre | |
