Loubelle Dau F 1886 13 Single MO MO KY At school , Mima Dau F 1896 4 Single MO MO KY At school , Georgia Dau F 1898 1 Single MO MO KY At school As told by Carrol Gilbers, granddaughter of William Henry and Luetta: My grandfather was a sheriff of Jackson County, Mo. but was caught up by drinking buddies, and became an alcoholic. After Bartlett Bird died, grandpa decided to come West because his son Tom and daughter Dora were in Yakima. My grandmother, Luetta would not go with him. She might consider it if he 'dried out. Mom cried and convinced them, she should go with him to 'take care of him.' So, this young girl 12 years old & her drunken father came West. What better place to 'dry-out' than out in the 'desert' of Yakima? So for 2 years they lived in a big tent way out in the 'boon-docks.' Mother had to walk 6 miles to school and 6 miles home, 1 mile to get water and 1 mile back, carrying the water. She made him dinners and did the best she could to care for him. He finally 'dried-out' and Luetta (grandma) and my aunt Mima who was 3 years older than Mother, moved out to join them, as soon as he found a house in town for them to live. I did forget to tell you, Yakima gets a healthy amount of snow in the winter, which made the trek to and from school a challenge. They probably 'drank' snow. She never said. Grandpa and Mom must have come out in 1911 beings she was 12 and her birthday was Dec. 22, 1898. When Mother was 16 she moved out to Everett, where her brother and sister had moved. Once she got a job and got her own place to stay, Wm &Luetta moved over to live with her. Mother did clerking and eventually became the buyer for Rumbaugh's Department Store. She met and married my Dad, lived in Everett until she was 25, when she, my dad and brother 'junior' moved toBellingham, WA, in with the 'yuppies' of that time, had Ken and eventually moved to Mt. Vernon, where I was born and where we lived until we kids left home. Both Mom & Dad died there.
